I’ve been serving at the United States Air Force Academy since 2002, as a Course Director at the Center for Character and Leadership Development and as a curriculum developer for the Commandant of Cadets. I'm also an adjunct instructor at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Anything you read or hear from me on this page is strictly MY thinking and is not necessarily endorsed by either of those institutions.
I’m a musician at heart, having played professionally for decades (You know you’re getting old when you start referring to time in decades.) but I’m also an author, speaker, life coach and mentor.
I graduated from Deming High School in Deming New Mexico and attended New Mexico State University for a few semesters before coming THIS close to getting drafted. That was decades ago. I joined the Air Force in 1972 to avoid the draft but ended up in the Pacific anyway. I served for almost 31 years, about a dozen of those as a Chief Master Sergeant (E-9) before getting thrown out in 2002. Yeah, they tell me I retired but I think retirement is a voluntary thing. I would have stayed in longer if I’d been allowed. But the blessing is that 1 November of 02 I’m out of the Air Force and 16 November of 02 I’m teaching at the Air Force Academy, yelling at future generals after being yelled AT by generals, the payback is GREAT! I love what I do and love the GREAT young men and women I hang with every day. They’re all Shining Stars! (You remember that tune, don’t you? Earth, Wind and Fire.)
I’m licensed to teach and mentor the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People/Families/Teens, FranklinCovey’s What Matters Most Time Management, the Myers-Briggs Type Instrument and I’m a Certified FranklinCovey Life Coach.
I’ve got a couple of Associates Degrees from the Community College of the Air Force and earned (Trust me! I EARNED it!) a Board of Governors Bachelor’s Degree from Eastern Illinois University, and two Masters degrees, one in Human Relations and one in Adult and Higher Education, from the University of Oklahoma.
My commentary on various leadership and life skills articles has been published in newspapers throughout the world and I’ve authored Heirpower! Eight Basic Habits of Exceptionally Powerful Lieutenants, So Ya Wanna Be THE Chief?!, 4 Things a High School Grad’s Gotta Do to Succeed in Life (with my daughter, Elyse), S.S.G.T., and What I Learned From Dad Made Me a Better Man.
I’ve done a few things but what’s most important to me is my family, especially my lovely bride of more than 41 wonderful and fulfilling years, Debbie, my two daughters, their husbands, my five granddaughters, and one grandson!
I look forward to connecting with you in whatever way you need my assistance. Please feel free to write to me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Until then, be GREAT! Keep the drive alive!
